Common questions
How do I work out a percentage of a number?
Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. So 20% of 80 is 80 × 20 ÷ 100, which is 16. The first mode above does exactly that.
How do I calculate a percentage increase?
Subtract the old value from the new one, divide by the old value, then multiply by 100. From 80 to 100 is (100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100, which is a 25% increase.
Why doesn't a 20% fall cancel a 20% rise?
Because the second percentage applies to a bigger number. 80 plus 20% is 96, and 96 minus 20% is 76.8 rather than 80. Undoing a 20% rise takes a fall of 16.67%.
What is the difference between percent and percentage points?
A rate moving from 20% to 25% has risen five percentage points, but that is a percentage increase of 25%. Interest and unemployment figures are quoted in points to avoid the ambiguity.
