Common questions

  • Why does my 1 TB drive show as 931 GB?

The drive really is 1 TB — a trillion bytes. Your operating system divides by 1,024 rather than 1,000 but still writes “GB”, and a trillion bytes is 931.32 GiB. Nothing is missing.

  • What is the difference between KB and KiB?

A kilobyte is 1,000 bytes; a kibibyte is 1,024. The gap compounds at every step, so a terabyte and a tebibyte are about 10% apart rather than 2.4%.

  • How many bits are in a byte?

Eight. Storage is quoted in bytes and network speed in bits, which is why a 100 Mbps connection downloads at about 12.5 MB/s rather than 100.
